  • The dark side of economy : a developmental study
Polič, Marko, 1946- ; Novak Zabukovec, Vlasta
Every economy has also its dark side, shown in unemployment, theft, swindle, poverty, etc. This is especially true for the states in economic crisis, and transition from one political system to the ... other, which is quite different in nature. While the development and content of the ideas of unemployement and poverty were extensively studied in the past, it was not so for some other prenomena, like corruption, tax evasion, begging, swindle, etc. The present study is devoted to adolescents' and youth's understanding of such concepts. Therefore young people of different age (13, 17 and 20 years) were asked about these phenomena, and possibilities to suppress them. Besides, they had to answer to Kahle's list of values (LOV) and Richins and Dawson's scale of material values. Believing, that pre-existing values and beliefs, structure and the comprehension of reality, we try in this way to study young people's attitudes and opinions regarding "deviant" economy within the frame of their value system. It appeared that the differences among the three age groups are rather small, more in degree than in direction. The explanation could lie in the fact, that subjects are in general at the same level of cognitive development, the main difference being in the quality and quantity of their experience. Nevertheless they differ in the value orientation, mainly in order of values' importance. All three groups have rather strong materialistic orientation, at least in comparison with the original Richins and Dawson's data. Both, values in general, and materialistic values are connected with subjects' perception of discussed concepts.
