  • HAZ fracture toughness in HSLA steels of different strengths and mis-matched properties
    Rak, Inoslav ; Treiber, Arpad
Effects of strenght differences (mis-match) between weld and two base metals as well as local variations of stregth within weld HAZ zones on the toughness properties were discussed. Due to high ... global weld joint mis-match, fracture deviation from CGHAZ into weld or base occured. This event occured in both similar and dissimilar weld joints and as a result the measured HAZ fracture toughness was not correct. SENB specimens were used for testing the HAZ fracture toughnes when the HAZ deep notch crack was introduced along the weld axis. The approximately straight fusion lines of a narrow gap weld enabled the CGHAZ region to be sampled also by deep notch crack perpendicular to the weld axis in the vicinity of the fusion line when CT specimens were used. The significante of the local fracture toughness measurement technique was also discused by comparing the CTOD results of ▫$\delta$▫5 and British Standard ▫$\delta$▫BS. Some differences in the two methods were discused, in particular for CGHAZ toughness of similar joints.
