    The production of hot-rolling strips with specific dimensions requires the planning of the slab dimensions and the dimension-change traction of slabs along the production line. This paper is focused ... on a determination of the slab width during rolling on a bluming mill on the basis of existing edger measurements. A combination of an edger set-width measurement and the energy consumed to achieve the desired slab width on the bluming mill has enabled an observation of the slab widths during rolling, and a more precise determination of the casting slab width. For a calculation of the energy consumed for the slab width rolling a mathematical model of the unloaded edger was built. The edger roller was treated as a stiff, rotary-driven body. The model calculates the power consumed for the velocity changes of the unloaded edger using the velocity input signal. The constructed model has enabled an estimation of the power consumed for slab-width rolling only. The acquired information is instantly written in a database and at the same time is used in a charge-width report. The presented data treatment cannot replace a strip-width measurement device on the bluming mill, but it has given an important insight into the rolling process and represents a platform for decision-support about the further investment in a continuous caster and rolling-mill equipment.
