  • The attractiveness of social infrastructure for older persons in Slovenia
Drobne, Samo ; Mali, Jana, socialno delo, 1974- ; Bogataj, Marija, 1950-
Purpose - This paper aims to analyse the impact of the level of community care infrastructure on internal migration. Design/methodology/approach - The paper introduces an asymmetric approach to the ... special case of spatial interaction models to analyse factors that influence migration flows structured by three age cohorts of 0-49 years-old, 50-74 years-old and 75+ years-old. The model uses publicly available and free databases at the mezzo level in a state. The analysis was performed for inter-municipal interactions of migrants structured by age cohorts. Findings - The results show the different influences of analysed factors that influence the migration flows of three cohorts: the distance friction is the highest for the cohort of 0-49 years old and the lowest for the cohort of 75+ years old. As expected, the gross earning is much more important for working population, but the level of the community care (both institutional and social home care) is increasing by aging and is the most important for the oldest cohorts. Research limitations/implications - The results show that there are other important factors, which influence the migration flows of older persons. Therefore, for better results, other, also more subjective factors should be included in the model. Practical implications - The paper gives suggestions for further development of the model to analyze the attractiveness of social infrastructure for older inhabitants and to answer how important is the development of infrastructure for seniors. Originality/value - So far, the impact of social infrastructure on attractiveness and stickiness of municipalities has not been addressed by such quantitative methods. In addition to the suggested approach to study the impact of social infrastructure on the wellbeing of the older population, this paper also identifies a need for more in-depth studies into this topic that is in our program for the research shortly.
