  • Chromium control in the EAF during stainless steel manufacture = Izguba kroma pri procesu izdelave nerjavnih jekel na EAF
    Arh, Boštjan ...
Stainless steels are characterized by chromium contents in excess of 10 % Cr. Austenitic stainless steels containing between 16 % and 24 % Cr. Chromium is a chemically active and expensive element of ... stainless steel. The analysis of chromium behavior reveals that more than 97 % of chromium losses occur in the EAF. Chromium oxidation in EAF is the major source of chromium loss in stainless steel manufacture. This oxidation is caused by the oxides present in the charge materials, and oxygen decarburization. Oxidation of chromium by dissolved oxygen may start simultaneously with oxidation of other element as C, Al, Si and Mn in the steel, depending on the temperature and relative activity of chromium, oxygen and these elements. Increase charge silicon levels can inhibit meltdown oxidation; however effective slag reduction after oxygen blow with carbon injection during refining and control of slag basicity, and finally, to achieve a slag reduction at tapping can chromium loss in the EAF reduced. In the present work a control of chromium content during the manufacture of stainless steel in EAF at steel plant Acroni Jesenice will be presented.
