    Structural and histochemical characteristics of biceps femoris and pectoralis profundus muscles, have been analysed in two lines of cockerels at different ages. Onthe basis of metabolic enzyme ... activity of succinate dehydrogenase and alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase we analysed the effect of selectionand growth on the prevailing type of energy metabolism and diameter of all fibres.Changes in metabolic characteristics in fibres of both muscles were parallel with the growth rate of the cockerels. In the and sixth week, which is the phase of rapid growth, the activity of enzymes representin oxidative and glycolytic metabolic pathways was very high, after the sixth week thre wasa very slight decreas (P=0.065), according to the decrease of the cockerelsgrowth rate. At all four ages the mean fibre diameters were larger inm. pectoralis profundus than in m. biceps femoris. (P<0.05). Selection for body mass had no effect on energy metabolism, but it induced increase in cross-sectional areas of muscle fibres. Cockerels selected for higher body mass (line D(+)) had larger mean diameter than those selected for lower mass (line D(-)). In line D(+) animals we often observed giant cells, which are thesign of morphologic alteration.
