  • Smrť a umieranie : pokus o ich detabuizáciu na príklade súčasnej slovenskej prózy
    Sevšek Šramel, Špela
Paradoxically, eros and thanatos - historically the most universal subjects of literature - conceal a considerable taboo: the death of a loved one. What tends to be tabooed is not death in the sense ... of a particular absolute event; it is thinking about death. The present article seeks to demonstrate the genuine and direct nature of literature, its capacity to ch ange our perception of dying, with examples from the prose by two contemporary Slovak authors. In his postmodern novella Kôň na poschodí, slepec vo VrábÍoch (Horse on the Floor, Blind Man in Vráble, 1989), Pavel Vilikovský depicts the protagonist's fear of losing his connectedness as a result of his mother's death. Th e novel Happyendy (Happy Endings, 2005) by Jaroslava Blažková is a personal epistolary account based on taking leave from her dying husband. In both cases, being faced with death implies some time to look into oneself, a certain degree of self-exploration, be this through writing, recollections, or dealing with the mother - son relationship. Th e relative frequency of such topics in contemporary prose testifi es to the topicality and authenticity of such literature, no longer confi ned to itself, addressing topics that are socially significant but largely not spoken about. The gradual lift ing of taboos about dying as featured in those literary texts shows the power of literature to shape and alter both the individual and social reality.
