  • Parallel corpus vs. bilingual dictionary : their usefulness in translator training
    Mezeg, Adriana, 1981-
This article examines the usefulness of parallel corpora and bilingual dictionaries in translator training and their main (dis)advantages. The study is based on French texts translated into Slovenian ... by master's students. Fifty French words or expressions were selected that it was anticipated students would have difficulty translating into Slovenian, based on previous teaching experience. The students' translation solutions were examined, focusing on the usefulness of the journalistic part of the French-Slovenian parallel corpus FraSloK and Anton Grad's French-Slovenian dictionary. The results show that the parallel corpus contains better translation equivalents than the dictionary. However, the results of the students' questionnaires indicate, inter alia, that students do not use (parallel) corpora very often, reveal some important facts about their actual use of various language resources, and raise several questions that should be considered when working on a future dictionary as well as parallel corpus projects.
