  • Entzaubertes Gefühl, umkämpfter Sinn : zur Unbrauchbarkeit der Gefühle im frühen 20. Jahrhundert
    Donko, Kristian
Since around 1900, there has been a new fundamental scepticism towards the language and rhetoric of emotions. Feelings, in so far as they are to be understood as an expression of authentic ... individuality, lose credibility. This corresponds to the social, (media-) technological and cultural changes that were occurring at that time. As a result of these changes, previous ideas of man and human nature came under enormous pressure. New anthropological concepts became necessary, which left behind emotional fixations on preferences for inwardness, authenticity, originality, etc. and instead emphasized the artificiality and existential indetermination of modern subjects. Such modern anthropologies appear not only in theoretical texts, but also and especially in literature. This article discusses key aspects of a modern devalorisation of emotions based on Helmuth Plessnerʼs, Robert Musilʼs and Walter Benjaminʼs analyses of contemporary culture. Furthermore, it examines thematic and narrative effects of this emotional cooling-down on literature (in, amongst others, Kafka, Musil, Brecht and in contrast to these authors: Goethe).
