    In a world that presents our reality only as a simulation there is an awakening desire for something authentic, for some direct event that is not a creation of the media. We want to be shaken by a ... reality that poses a sufficient threat for it to have nothing in common with the contrived images and simulacra that mark the postmodern culture of perception. There is a need for infection, a need to be stricken, to be moved, a need for effects that can awaken in us something truly foreign - marginal phenomena. Such phenomena are not only ambivalent when they awaken in us both horror and fascination, but literally hurt our feelings because of the engagement of our being with something foreign; we feel that something has touched us. Emotionality can thus be understood as an event that we create through the act of reading or which can only be revealed by the text.
