  • Trauer, Wut, Verzweiflung und Aggressivität : unterdrückte Emotionen in Bölls Billard um halb zehn und Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum
    Malgaj, Kristina
This article deals with repressed emotions that result from traumatic experiences and function as a trigger of key events in the narrative structure in two works by Heinrich Böll. The main theme of ... Böllʼs novel Billiards at Half-past Nine is the problem of overcoming the past and finding inner peace. The main characters Heinrich, Robert and Johanna Fähmel are in emotional conflict with themselves and are trying in vain to reconcile with their past. Thus, mixed emotions are bottled up in them: sadness and grief arise because of the loss of their family members and friends; anger and hatred arise because of the hypocritical post-War society. They oppress them for years, and in the end this leads to an explosion of hitherto repressed negative emotions. The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum, meanwhile, is the story of a young woman who becomes emotionally involved with a criminal, helps him to escape, and becomes a victim of the aggressive media. After the attacks of the media she shuts herself off from the rest of the world and suppresses the negative feelings caused by false statements in the media. Her helplessness changes into despair, which eventually leads to a violent act.
