  • On the generalised constraints principle in contact analysis
    Ulaga, Samo ; Flašker, Jože
The novel finite element technique for solving contact problems in gears, enabling usage of less spacious FE models with no effect on their accuracy is presented. A common contact detection algorithm ... in the framework of contact problem analysis with the finite element method, including a Generalised Constraints facility is shown. Using this approach, the model of the contacting bodies is simplified. To reduce the number of degrees of freedom, aspecial system of constraining them is introduced. In the field of contact analysis the above approach is novel and original. Lagrange multiplier method has been used for the imposition of the contact boundary conditions. Redundantgeometry description as been used to avoid the non-smooth geometry description provided by the FE shape function. Parametric spline functions have been applied for the above purpose. Consequently, contact detection and penetration size calculation algorithms become more simple and accurate. The benefits and drawbacks of the proposed approach are discussed. Presented method is successfully used for simulation of contact problems in gears.
