    In my B.A. dissertation I describe the history of the Welsh language, along with important events in its development from the prehistoric times until recent time. I start with some general ... linguistics, placing Welsh in the language tree and mentioning other Celtic languages. There is a brief description of the land of Wales itself, together with its history and the position in the United Kingdom. What follows is the history of the language, starting with Early Welsh, then Old Welsh, Middle Welsh and Modern Welsh. The most important literary works are also mentioned.There is strong focus on the relationship between Welsh and English, along with descriptions of how and when exactly the two languages came into contact and how this reflected in both societies in general. I focus more on those events in particular that left their mark in the history of the nation and with it the language. I also cast light on the position of Welsh nowadays - trends in the number of speakers, prevalence of the language in Wales and worldwide, bilingualism, administrative status, education, language promotion etc. The last part of my thesis deals with language contact and a short study of it, the relationship between Welsh and English, borrowings and loan words and also the grammar influences that the two languages have on each other. The occurrence of "Wenglish" is also covered.
