    This paper aims at predicting pronunciation errors of Swedish speakers on the segmental level in English by using the contrastive analysis approach. A subjacent hypothesis is that this is a good ... predictor of learners' errors. The theoretical bases for this paper and the methodological approach used rely mainly on the work by Jurančič Petek (2007) and Collins (2003). The benchmark English pronunciation is the Received Pronunciation (RP), whose phonemes are described, interspersed with remarks on Standard Swedish. The special position of English in Sweden is discussed. Allophonic variation in RP and Standard Swedish is treated in a separate chapter. Error analysis is applied to the recordings of six Swedish speakers. Both sexes are represented equally in the sample and the informants' ages vary from 20 to 64. Of the 33 anticipated errors, only 14 are borne out and nine more are added to the portfolio, yet some of these have different causes than negative transfer from L1. Contrastive analysis is a good starting point for predicting the errors of foreign learners with a common mother tongue; however, all predictions should be verified and, if necessary, adapted and expanded through error analysis of real-life examples. This research should be expanded to the contrastive analysis in other fields of linguistics, and the pool of informants should be enlarged.
