  • Is Kit Fine's definitional account of essence free of modality?

    Recently, the idea that metaphysical necessity and possibility are grounded in the constitutive natures of objects or their essences has gained popularity. Its big advantage is that it promises to ... help solving the problem of the source of the modal truth and the related problem of the possibility of modal knowledge. However, the explanation of metaphysical modality in terms of essences can only work if it is shown that essence itself can be explained conceptually as well as metaphysically without resorting to modality. I will take Kit Fine's definitional account of essence and show that it does not illegitimately rely on modality.
