  • Characterisation of rapid solidified nanocrystalline soft magnetic ribbons based on Fe-Si-B with Ni or with P and Ga additions

    Nanostructured soft magnetic materials derived from rapidly solidified Fe-Si-B alloys exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties due to the crystallization of nano-scale [alpha]-iron grains in an ... amorphous matrix. Nanocrystalline or even amorphous structure might be obtained by increasing the solidification rate or just opposite by decreasing the critical solidification rate by choosing the multi-atomic alloying system which has huge differences in atomic radius and has negative enthalpies of mixing among elements of system. Two types of ribbons were produced by melt-spinning technology, one having composition close to Finmet and other having composition to satisfy the rule for decreasing the critical solidification rate. The structures of produced alloys were investigated in details using FEG SEM supplemented by EDS, WDS and EBSD analytical tools. To obtain the proper electromagnetic performances the ribbons were annealed at different temperatures and structures were checked again. Additionally, surface analysisby AES and XPS was performed to characterise the forming phases. Also, combined EDS, WDS and EBSD analyses were applied for detailed phase analyses.
