  • Periodični tisk slovenskih cerkvenih skupnosti v Severni in Južni Ameriki ter Avstraliji s poudarkom na listu Ave Marija = Press of the Slovenian religious communities in North America, South America and Australia and Ave Maria in particular
    Kolar, Bogdan
At least three dimensions of the Slovenian ethnic groups around the world are to be considered of geat importance for the arising of the religious press. It has been centered on the conservation of ... faith and on spreading the Gospel, which is the fundamental mission of the Church and Church communities. Because many community members lived wide apart the press was the best and sometimes the only way to reach them, to communicate the religious message, and to preserve in them faith and ways of practising it as they had been used to practising religious values before leaving the native environment. Such apostolic work was something new, but it was the only way of enabling the leaders of the communities to come in contact with a larger number of the faithful. Nevertheless, its efficiency depended on the financial means as well as on the activity of the individual Church leaders. At the same time, the press was a link to the original community and also to ethnic groups in other countries. The intensity of this link varied through periods of time. An essential part of the Church press mission has been to keep alive the national identity and the consciousness of belonging to the same ethnic group. The basis for such work was the Church leaders' conviction that nationality is a value accepted and appreciated by the Christian faith. It was a basis for religious life and its strong support. Such an attitude was particularly stressed among the first generation of immigrants, who were emotionally still attached to the milieu that had to leave. It is impossible to eliminate the influence of the press and associations that were in political and ideological opposition from the initiatives for publisching religious press. Their attitudes, their interpretations of particular events, and considerations of religious phenomena required an adequate reaction. The press was one of the most efficient ways of doing so. With regard to the destinees that determined the image of each item the religious press can be classified in a couple of groups of which each had particular features. Parishbulletins have been in service of the basic level of the Church organization. In them prevailed information on parish life and on future activities. They also contained office timetable, proposals of working together etc. Most have been publisched weekly. Even though they appeared in alarge number of copies it is almost impossible to assert that a complete list can be drawn up. The firs one was published in Leadville, Colo., in 1906. In the same year the parish of St. Lawrence in Cleveland, O, gost its bulletin. Their number grew bigger after the Second World War. Bulletins dedicated to special groups, interests, and age groups appeared monthly or at times. They were supported by subscription. Among them, a couple was mean for children, for devotees of the Sacred Heart, for the supporters of the missionary work, and venerators of Bishop Friderik Baraga. A peculiar title was trying to keep together priests that worked among the Slovenes and to reinforce their commitment to their ethnic fellows. The press larger population was devoted to Slovenes that lived in one country, even though they also tried to establish contacts with the other. Their central meaning required higher quality, professional treatment, articles of common significane, and articles that were interesting for the majority. Around such a magazine a number of other activities developed. Fundamentally, in each country with a bigger Slovenian community such a magazine can be found, the oldest of them being "Ave Maria". The last part of this article focuses on ʹAve Mariaʹ, which is the oldest Slovenian religious magazine published without interruption till now. "Ave Maria" appeared for the first time on March 4th., 1909 as the bulletin of the NewYork branch of St. Raphael's Society for the protection of the immigrants. It was founded by the Franciscan father Kazimir Zakrajšek, who was its first editor. He was convinced that the press was the best and the most efficient means to spread the information and to influenve the opinion. When the Franciscan fathers tookover "Ave Maria" it became a strongly religious paper. It tried to compete with other Slovenian press and to rehect their liberal and anti-Catholic views. "Ave Maria" viewed Slovenes immigrants as Catholics and thus worked with and for the Catholic Slovenes and their religion. Between the two wars and after the Second World War, when a bigger group of Slovenes came to the United States, the monthly for the Slovene Catholic in America became less intransigent. In that period publication had its largest circulation, 6000 copies. Now it is published in 1500 copies. One of its permanent duties was to represent constituents of the Slovenian national ethos, such as the role of the religious values in the national history, personalities from the national and Church histories, especially among the missionaries and immigrants, ethnographic features, literature etc. And publishing house was also founded. It published school books, pieces of drama for Slovenian theater groups. Among each year an almanac called "Koledar Ave Maria". The magazine was opened for various organizations and helped Slovenes to organize themselves. The result of such a work is the spiritual and school center in Lemont near Chicago. The magazines' pages have been opened to the news from Slovene settlements and therefore they are an appreciated source to be used in writing the history of the Slovenian presence in the United States and other countries.
