    This master's thesis investigates the influence of extensive reading on vocabulary acquisition. It provides additional experimental support for the hypothesis that vocabulary acquisition takes place ... during meaning-focused extensive reading not only in one's native language, but also in a second or foreign language. The hypothesis is confirmed by means of an experiment, conducted in a foreign language context, with Slovenian secondary school students at the upper-intermediate proficiency level as subjects. The experimental group, consisting of third and fourth year secondary school students, read an unabridged version of the novel Animal Farm as part of the preparation for the Matura exam. Students' vocabulary knowledge was tested by means of a 30-item multiple choice test, which was administered as a pre- and post-test. The post-test indicated an average gain of 2.8 vocabulary items in the experimental group. The result of the control group remained unchanged, thus confirming that the gain in vocabulary knowledge was a consequence of extensive reading. The findings of the experiment may have possible implications for designing and implementing programmes promoting extensive reading in English as a foreign language in Slovenian primary and secondary schools.
