    In textbook sets for German as a foreign language are visual elements being used as a support for learning a second language in different areas. Two textbook sets are analyzed in this Master Thesis. ... The use and usage of images in tasks for acquiring vocabulary are being analyzed. In both textbook sets, there are some tasks for vocabulary learning supported with pictures, but not for all tasks. Pictures are helpful for motivating students since they raise their interest for the subject matter. They also help with the understanding, interpretation, and recollection of the vocabulary. Vocabulary, that pupils memorize and understand, is saved in mental lexicon. Mental lexicon is personal vocabulary which consists of words and their information that are known to individual in mother and foreign language. The vocabulary expands constantly. Both textbook sets have for each lesson, a composed introductory page, on which visual elements that visualize the students the upcoming subject matter. Results of analysis shows that graphics in both textbook sets is suitably and deliberately chosen on the introduction pages, where thematically completely motivates pupils, and also by textbook exercises, and as such encourage to conquer, to refresh and to expand vocabulary on level A1.
