The question of genre in contemporary fiction : China Miéville The City & the City : heterogeneity of genre in China Miéville's novel The City & the City = Vprašanje žanra v sodobnem leposlovju : China Miéville The City & the City : heterogenost žanra v romanu Chine Miévilla The City & the City : magistrsko deloMajerič, NastjaGenre is a term that has been present throughout history and has been a subject of research in the field of literature. To fully understand genre, it is crucial to first understand how it was ... created, understood by both readers and critics, recreated, recognized... It is also important to observe the development of genre from its beginnings, which date as far back as Antiquity - however, genre today does not carry the same meaning as it did back then. The teachings of the literary giants of Antiquity shaped how genre was understood and researched in Renaissance and Neoclassicism. Genre started to develop into its modern form in Romanticism and the following periods, and underwent a significant reconstruction in Postmodernism. If we have to summarize genre, we can say that its definition, understanding and research have been fluctuating and changing ever since it first came into existence. While there are many approaches to genre, in this master's thesis a brief historic overview on how genre was researched, how it developed and what the most important legacy of each period was is provided. An introduction to genre and research of the most important concepts that have influenced what genre is today are the two main fields that create the premises on which this master's thesis' theoretical framework is built. This framework is the basis for the analytical part of the thesis. While in literary history genre has always been perceived as a term used in connection with homogeneity - each book was written in "one genre only", the understanding of the topic, and the literary tradition itself, have changed. Today, genre is a term that shifted from homogeneity to heterogeneity; and this is what the analytical part of the thesis presents: the heterogeneity of genre in China Miéville's The City & the City. The analysed novel is a combination of the new weird and the police procedural; both are presented and discussed in order to prove that the selected novel is a heterogeneous one. The aim of the master's thesis is to discuss the question of genre and focus on the contemporary phenomenon of its heterogeneity, exemplified by the chosen novel.Vrsta gradiva - magistrsko delo ; neleposlovje za odrasleZaložništvo in izdelava - Ljubljana : [N.
