  • On the microscopic aspects of oxygen ion induced sublimation of the NiO(001) surface by molecular dynamics simulation

    We present molecular dynamics simulation results on the process hapening upon deposition of oxygen ions on the NiO(001) surface. We found that in presence of local excess of charge, the deposited ... O[sup]2- ions combine with surface Ni ions to form ad-molecules that subsequently escape from the surface. In the case of electrically neutral system we found that the oxygen adatoms form chains of NiO molecules that appear to be stable, although diffusing on the surface, leading to a more active substrate. These findings explain experimental results referring the catalytic probes used in reactive plasma diagnostics.
