  • The effect of hyperbaric oxygen on laser-Doppler flux motion induced by postocclusive reactive hyperaemia

    The effect of oxygen on vasomotion has been studied in animal preparations where the elevated pO2 decreased the vasomotion frequency. In contrast, the data obtained from the human skin showed no ... effect of high inspired oxygen (upto 1 ATA) on laser-Doppler (LD) flux motion. To further clarify the effect of oxygen we used normobaric (100% O2 at 1 ATA) and hyperbaric oxygen (100% O2at 2 ATA). LD fluxmetry was performed with the LD probe attached to the nailfold skin. To provoke flux motion we performed 4 and 8 min occlusions of index finger arteries in 8 healthy subjects. Our results show no effect of normobaric oxygen on the principle LD flux motion frequency, what is in accordance to the previous studies. However, hyperbaric oxygen significantly reduced the LD flux motion frequency from 0.14 + 0.02 (SD) Hz to 0.12 + 0.02 Hz (p=0.05, Bonferoni t-test). The effect could be due to the vasoconstrictiveaction of hyperbaric oxygen that consequently leads to diminished distention of vascular smooth muscle cell after the release of arterial occlusion.
