  • Theoretical basis for optimisation of track geometry maintenance and logistics support
    Mlinarić, Tomislav Josip
Permanent way engineers must maintain the track at a given quality at minimal expenses. They have to define the minimal quality levels and to assure an optimal allocation of resources (staff, ... material, machines, funds, available periods). The aim of this paper is to show how, once we know the condition of tracks from current TMC measurements in the form of Track Quality Indices (TQI), we can make use of the predictive capability of the historical deterioration rates to predict where and when maintenance will be required. Extensive use of track geometry performance data permits to forecast the effects of deterioration and maintenance activity. Forecasts, based on statistical models of track geometry deterioration and maintenance effectiveness, are used by the cost and economic evaluation models to develop maintenance programs. This paper also describes the necessary engineering logistic support, which is an essential and integrated part of managing maintenance operations and has direct impact on the service and/or production efficieny.
