  • Characterization of polymer surface modification [Elektronski vir]
    Ribitsch, Volker ; Stana-Kleinschek, Karin
Surface modification is an essential step in polymer processing specially in fibre finishing applied to optimise and improve properties. Various treatments (chemical processes) are applied to modify ... hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity, to introduce new or to increase the number of functional surface groups, to enable specific interactions with other compounds, to change surface structure and to improve the chemical inertness (flame treatments). In order to characterize and if possible monitor this surface modifications, two kinds of investigation methods are. used, one determining structural and chemical modifications of very small surface areas as for example XPS, ESCA, MALDI-TOF, SAM, IR-microscopy, AFM offering very detailed information. The other ones are methods providing information about chemical and physico-chemical properties as ATR-IR, surface plasmon resonance, surface tension, surface free energy surface charge and ellipsometry, integrating uponan extended surface area. These methods provide less detailed but very important representative information about surface modification.
