  • Influence of small artificial defect on the fatigue strength of coarse grain heat affected zones

    The influence of a small surface defect at the weld joint toe on the bend fatigue strength has been studied. Microstructures of coarse grain HAZ were prepared on a weld cycle simulator for two ... different HSLA steels. Indenting of Vickers diamond pyramide was used to produce small artificial surface defects. Thay are of app. the same size as the primary austenitic grain of coarse grain HAZ. The fatigue crack starts to initiate in smooth specimens due to cyclic stress. It starts to initiate at the bottom of indentations on defected specimens. The fatigue crack initiation is a result of interaction between the defect and the cycling stress. Residual stresses, which appear due to indenting of Vickers pyramid, reduce the fatigue strength. To reduce the residual stresses, the specimens with defects were heat treated. The result ishigher fatigue strength.
