Theoretical framework: Airway management and the provision of sufficient oxygenation and ventilation are of the essence in the treatment of critically ill patients. An immediate assessment and an ... early, coordinated response are required in both the prehospital and hospital setting. The aim of the diploma thesis was to examine the airway management and artificial ventilation competencies of emergency medical technicians and nursing personnel in an Emergency Department in the Koroška region. Methods: Quantitative research methods were employed. The primary source of data was a questionnaire designed specifically for the survey. Secondary sources consisted of books, handbooks, textbooks, conference proceedings, internet sources, and databases such as COBISS, ProQuest, CINAHL, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar. SPSS 23 was used for statistical analysis. The results were displayed in the form of tables and graphs. Results: 50 percent of emergency medical technicians reported that they treated cases of airway obstruction several times per month, with 50 percent reporting that they treated them several times per year. 50 percent of nursing personnel in the Emergency Department at Slovenj Gradec General Hospital treated cases of obstructed airway several times per month and 42.9 percent treated them several times per year. 81 percent of respondents were motivated for learning and educated themselves on their own initiative. Over 80 percent wished to receive additional training in artificial ventilation. In the doctor's absence, 95.5 percent of surveyed emergency medical technicians used i-gel laryngeal masks and oropharyngeal airway devices. 92 percent of nursing personnel in the Emergency Department at Slovenj Gradec General Hospital did the same. Discussion: No significant differences in the treatment of obstructed airways were found between emergency medical technicians and nursing personnel employed in the Emergency Department at Slovenj Gradec General Hospital. Similarly, no differences were found regarding the use of devices for artificial ventilation. The respondents of both groups wanted to receive additional training for artificial ventilation.
