  • Changes of muscle evoked responses after repetitive stimulation of cortical mtor areas in normal subjects
    Romeo, S... ...
We studied the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered to the motor cortex at 120% motor threshold intensity in 13 subjectsat rest and in 8 subjects during a background ... contraction. A train of 20 stimuli delivered at a frequency of 5 Hz with th subjects at rest increasedthe size of muscle evoked potentials evoked in hand and forearm muscles; the facilitation was already evident over trains of 11 stimuli. The facilitation of the test response obtained after a conditioning train of stimli outlasted the trains by 600 ms. When the subjects voluntarly contractedthe target muscle a train of 20 stimuli at 5 Hz left the size of theMEP unchanged. We conclude that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation changes motor cortex excitability by facilitating cortical excitatory interneurones.
