  • Hygiene assurance in hospital laundries - microbiological evaluation of critical control points
    Fijan, Sabina ; Šostar-Turk, Sonja
The goal of every hospital laundry is to maintain and constantly improve its services of washing soiled, infected textiles to a clean, fresh and disinfected state. Laundered hospital textiles ... shouldnćt contain micro organisms that cause diseases because their users are patients with a low immune system in should therefore be protected from infections from inappropriately washed textiles. It is most important that the laundering procedure has an anti-microbial effect, especially when washing hospital textiles that contain many kinds of pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses, and, at the same time doesnćt cause excessive damage on the washed textiles. Besides achieving a sufficient anti-microbial effect of the laundering procedure, it is also necessary to introduce regular cleaning and disinfectingmeasures of all the technical equipment (press extractor, dryer, conveyer belts etc.), areas, surfaces, shelves etc. which come into contact with cleaned laundry, thus minimising the growth of microorganisms in order toachieve hygiene level of hospital textiles. The purpose of the research was to assess the hygiene level in different hospital laundries in Slovenia. The critical control points (CCPs) were chosen where the risk of bio contaminationis the greatest according to HACCP-principles (Hazard analysis and critical control points). The aim of the research was to conduct a sanitary microbiological research of hygiene at the chosen critical control points and then compare the results to the general RAL-GZ 992/2 standards thatconstitute important quality assurance recommendations for textile care inhospital laundries. The sanitary microbiological assessment of the chosen hospital laundries showed that (i) the most important CCP was the chemo-thermal washing efficiency of the washing process that depends on the anti-microbial washing effect, optimal washing quality as well as the use of clean washing water and regular cleaning/disinfecting measures inside the washing machine (ii) it is also very important to introduce regular cleaning and disinfecting measures in the clean area of the laundry, especially all surfaces that come into contact with laundered textiles in all subsequent process of textile handling which include: wringing; drying; sorting; ironing;folding; and packing, thus preventing recontamination of textiles.
