  • Zobozdravstveno varstvo otrok v posebnih zavodih = National dental child-care service in special institutions
    Škapin, Marta
Slovenian national Dental Childcare Service programme is designed in such a manner that it supervies a child from his birth to the age of 19. Good resultsare achieved by collaboration among parents, ... educators, teachers and later on children, and of course, by maximal accessibility to dental service. Among the children population with special needs, the children with a light orsever disability in special institutions, have a special place. Since they present the risk group, dental programme has to be adapted to them and their parents. Such adapted dental programme adopted for 64 children with a light orsevere disability in a special institution in Dobrna is described in the article. For the past ten years the children have been guided using dispensarymethod with all familiar and possible preventive measures. The profesionals of the institution are also involved in these activities. The paper shows the percentage of those with damaged teeth (MDF=2,26), the percentage of unaffected persons (33%), and an annual growth of disease (MDF-0,05). The results are surprisingly much better then the average of Slovenia. It is hard to find an avaliable dentist for these children in the system of free choice, therefore the adaped dental programmes are the only solution for them. This kind of programmes can be financially demanding only at the beginning, but they soom pay off, since the children receiving medical dental treatment under anastetic are more often an exception to the rule.
