  • Rethinking liberal education : choice, discovery and judgment
    Brighouse, Harry
This paper explores the influential objection to liberalism that it relies on an indefensible conception of the self, due to Michael Sandel. The objection claims that the liberal self is ... unencumbered, but that in fact people are partly constituted by their historical situatedness. The paper argues that Sandel's objection rests on a systematic misreading of liberal commitments, and that liberals do not valorize choice for its own sake, but only because it allows people to act on their reasoned judgments. It goes on to show that the encumbered self that Sandel defends is deeply unappealing. It explores the consequences of the rejection of the communitarian objection for pedagogy in religious education and policy with regard to faith-based schooling.
