  • Surface modification of non-woven textiles via sol-gel process
    Lobnik, Aleksandra ...
Sol-gel technology offers simple method for manipulation of the structure, configuration, composition and chemical characteristics of organic matrices. This property and the ability to immobilize ... sol-gels covalently on textile support make this technology appealing in surface modification of fibers and other textile structures. Presented study shows that the properties of sol-gelcoated non-woven textiles depend to a high degree on the type of applied sol-gel precursor. For the initial surface modification of needle punched non-woven textiles, made from polyester and aramide fibres, the copolymers of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) and organically modified siloxanes (ormosils) such as: methyltrimethoxysilane (Me-TriMOS), dimethyldimethoxysilane (DiMe-DiMOS), phenyltrimethoxysilane (Ph-TriMOS) and diphenyldi-methoxysilane (DiPh-DiMOS) were tested. The best results regarding mechanical properties and the resistance to surface wetting of coated needle punched non-woven textiles were achieved by using the ormosil precursor such as 100% methyltrimethoxysilane (Me-TriMOS).
