Some considerations of potential - mapping as a method for the detection of corrosion in reinforced and prestressed concrete structures

In the paper the results of potential-mapping inspections of several concrete highway bridges in Slovenia are presented and evaluated. Two different types of measuring systems were used. The results ...of the potential-mapping measurements have been compared with the results of visual inspections, with the metallography, fractography and mechanical propperties of specimens of reinforcing and prestressing steel, and with the chemical and electrochemical properties of specimens concrete. Potential-maps were determined on different parts of bridges (decks, beams, piers), especially in wet areas near damaged water-proofing layers, expansion joints and drainage systems. Attempts were made to correlate the potential-maps with the degree of corrosion of the reinforcing rebars and post-tensioned tendons. The possibility of distinguishing between the corrosion of post-tensioned tendons and the corrosion of reinforcing steel using potential-mapping techniques received considerable attention during the evaluation of the measured potential-maps
