  • Ultrasound in the pretreatment processing of flax fibres
    Fakin, Darinka ...
This paper studies the effects of different pretreatment processes, with and without the application of ultrasonic energy, on the wight loss, degree of polymerization, tenacity, elongation and ... whiteness of flax fibres. Flax fibres were subjected to different scouring processes, e.g., alkaline, acidic, and enzymatic scouring, and subsequent oxidative bleaching. The results obtained indicate that the specific method of scouring flax fibres has a significant effect on these properties and on the bleaching process. The application of ultrasound in the scouring and bleaching bath increases the fiber weight loss and whiteness of the flax fibres. The optimal pretreatment process is enzymatic bioscouring because it provides a lower weight loss and a higher tenacity and whiteness.
