  • “Going international” : the (non-)importance of non-aligned countries’ markets in the foreign economic relations of Yugoslavia
    Udovič, Boštjan, 1980-
This article examines the political and economic relations between Yugoslavia and countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The analysis, conducted with different research methods, provides the ... following findings: (1) in Yugoslavia–NAM relations, politics was more important than economic benefits; (2) Yugoslav enterprises (known as Basic Organizations of Associated Labor) were in practice oriented more towards Western/capitalist markets and were less interested in NAM markets; (3) for ideological reasons (Yugoslavia’s presumed hegemony in the NAM) and due to Yugoslav enterprises’ low interest in operating in NAM markets, the Yugoslav authorities used different administrative measures to enhance economic cooperation with NAM countries, but with little success. The study thus concludes that the different expectations of both parties meant the economic cooperation between Yugoslavia and NAM countries was destined to fail from its very formation
