  • Research potential of archaeological woodfrom the Ljubljansko barje (Slovenija)
    Čufar, Katarina ...
We present investigations of archaeological wood from the Ljubljansko barje, which is a peat bog and practically the only site of discovery of large amounts of wood from the distant past in Slovenia. ... In the last decade we have investigated over 4700 samples of waterlogged wood from eight prehistoric settlements. They mainly originated from piles that were pounded vertically into the ground. The selection and proportion of wood species varied greatly among the dwellings. The wood mainly belonged to genera Fraxinus and Quercus. In addition we identified Alnus, Acer, Fagus, Populus, Carpinus, Ulmus, Salix,Corylus, and Abies. Results of wood identification were in some locations compared with results of palaeobotanical and macrofauna analyses. They indicated that the selection of wood at the pile dwelling sites corresponded with the vegetation in the nearby surroundings. The frequency and characteristics of anomalies in the wood anatomy could be related to population density and the number of domestic animals and game. Oak and ash samples containing more than 45 tree-rings were used for dendrochronological investigations. Dendrochronology combined with radiocarbon dating enabled us to relatively date the dwellings that were inhabited between the 37th and the 25th century BC. This time span of their existence corresponded with the duration of a major part of copper-age in the region. Our results will help to improve the dating of other copper age sites in Slovenia and neighbouring regions, where wood for dating has not been preserved. The investigations have demonstrated that the archaeological wood is a highly revealing source of information, and also that further investigations are needed to take full advantage of it.
