  • Water quality modelling of the river Sava
    Drolc, Andreja ; Zagorc-Končan, Jana
Discharge of organic, degradable waste waters into rivers results in decrease of dissolved oxygen concentration which is considered to be a good indicator of river water quality. The major causes for ... oxygen deficit in river are metabolism of pollutants by micro-organisms (biodegradation) and respiration of plants, algae and phytoplankton. On the other hand, factors which are beneficial for dissolved oxygen balance are athomspehric reareation and production of oxygen due to photosynhtesis. One of the methods to predict the influence of discharged waste waters on river dissolved oxygen conentration is mathematical modelling of water quality. The first classic river water quality model which describes dissolved oxygen concentration and biochemical oxygen demand relationship was developed in 1925 by Streeter and Phelps. Nowdays, the most widely used for conventional pollutant impact evaluationa is QUAL2E model, developed by US Environment Protection Agency. Water quality of the river Sava nearby Ljubljana, Slovenia was investigated. In that area, river Sava receives two tributaries, the river Ljubljanica and the river Kamniška Bistrica. The river Ljubljanica is highly polluted due to discharge of industrial and minicipal waste waters from Ljubljana sewage collecting station in Zalog where waste waters are treated only mechanically. Surface water quality model QUAL2E was applied to estimate the impact of discharged wastewater on quality of the river Sava. QUAL2E model was modified for our purposes and sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the most important factors which affect dissolved oxygen concentration in river water. The model was calibrated and validated according to the field measurements. On the basis of the model predictions, the necessary degree of treatment of wastewater was determined. It was estimated that waste water should be treated to reach BOD value under 30 mg l so that even in the summer low flow period Slovenian water quality standards will be not be violated (dissolved oxygen concentration higer than 5 ml l in all sections of the river).
