    Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Štritof's translation/ The aim of the article is topresent the results of an analysis of Niko Štritof's Slovenian translation of Cesare Sterbini's libretto for Rossini's Il ... Barbiero di Siviglia. After a few general remarks about the opera and its libretto, the principle of target-function orientation, wich determines the overall translation strategy adopted by Štritof, is presented. Striving for a linguistic and cultural as well as functional domestication of the Italian text, he has produced a translation which can be appreciated as a piece of literature and as a text ready to be set to music./ As is evident from the illustrative examples taken from the two text, Štritof's domestication strategy involves considerable modifications of the target text with respect to the italian libretto at different levels, from the linguistic level to the level concerning the staging of the text as part of an opera performance (changes in stage directions, arrangement of the scenes, roles of the characters etc.). It is suggested that the felicitous outcome of this efforts as a translator cannot be accounted for solely by his mastery of the Slovenian language and must alsobe seen as related to the professional competence which was the result of his long-standing active involvement in the art of opera and by virtue of wichhe knew what liberties he could afford in the translation of Sterbini's libretto.
