  • Transformation of block-neighbourhoods in Slovenia : the impact of the market economy
    Pak, Mirko
The residential areas of Slovenia are characterized by numerous block-neighbourhoods or block-settlements composed of a number of flats or apartements in medium to high-rise buildings. Over a half of ... the inhabitants of Slovene towns now live in these blocks of flats, which were built after the Second World War as part of the new socialist society. Although the sizes of these distinctive areas are small compared to other parts of former communist countries of Europe this survey shows that they vary in many ways, such as by age, location, quality and ownership. But even greater changes in these neighbourhoods have taken place after the independence of Slovenia in 1990, with its rapid adoption of the market economy, producing major transformations in the character of these distinctive residential areas.
