  • Shakespearove usodne sestre : diplomsko delo
    Jamnik, Brina
The Weird sisters from Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth underwent a considerable change throughout the years. Their original purpose turned completely upside down, perhaps largely due to the credit of ... Lyman Frank Baum, who entirely changed the tradition of the witch character with his children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and opened the way for the fantasy novels we know today. The character, that in fairytales symbolized all the qualities, unacceptable in a woman, in Baum's work becomes defined entirely by her own actions. Baum's tradition was continued by John Updike, who was first to construct witch characters that were much more human and natural than the Weird sisters. Updike's humanization of witches was continued by Terry Pratchett, whose Discworld novels can be interpreted as a critique of population politics and stereotypes that led to female oppression. In his works, Pratchett combines and enhances what was started by Updike and Baum. His works were followed by the series of Harry Potter novels from the English author J. K. Rowling, who continued the humanization of witches and the emphasizing of the fact that one creates his own destiny. Harry's antagonist Voldemort fails precisely because he - much like Macbeth - wrongly interprets the ambiguous prophecy. What used to be screeching hags, plotting mischiefs around their cauldron, are today powerful persons in charge of their own destinies; furthermore, their mystique makes them alluring instead of repulsive and the reader is able to identify with them even when they play the roles of antagonists. Such portrayal is seen in the popular films and series like The Witches of Eastwick from 1987, where the lead roles were played by Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer; also in the Harry Potter films and in the television series Salem, based on Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. Therefore, today's witches are not persons, worth of contempt, but powerful and charismatic individuals, who draw power from their confidence and self-realization. What used to be a character, designed as an effective tool for female subordination, turned into its complete opposite: the symbol of feminism.
