    In the past, it was important to master at least one foreign language, now days we see, there is a great necessity for not only mastering several foreign languages but also achieving a higher level ... of mastery. To master a foreign language in everyday situations often does not enable also using this language for educational and professional purposes. Especially this need is a big pedagogical challenge and it forces us to search for new ways in which to teach students effectively and broadly across the level of basic language knowledge and prepare them to use the foreign language for educational and professional purposes. The biggest challenge is the development of lexical competence as vocabulary is certainly the aspect that we should develop more effectively. One of the possibilities to achieve a higher level of foreign language competence is the content and language integrated learning or CLIL. In this article, we present the results of empirical study, in which we found that with the CLIL approach, we could achieve a higher level of lexical competence than with the existing communicative approach. To conclude, we present some guidelines for implementing this approach into foreign language teaching.
