  • The challenges of professional ethics in war and crisis interpreting [Elektronski vir]
    Chitrakar, Rok
Taking into consideration the ambiguous status and contradictory role of war and conflict interpreters, the question of ethics should be in the forefront of discussion. Dilemmas arising from the ... constant struggle of making professional choices present a substantial challenge to interpreters who have to bear in mind the severe consequences these might entail. As there is a need to establish general guidelines that could lighten the interpreter's load, professional communities strive to create codes of conduct or fundamental instructions that would enable its members to better face tough choices emerging in different communicative contexts. The paper aims to provide an overview of the main aspects of the challenges of establishing a set of relevant and practicable ethical guidelines for interpreting in areas of war, conflict and crisis. The issue is examined th rough the sometimes oversimplified and prescriptive prism of widely recognized and accepted ethical princi ples laid down in professional codes, with a view to encouraging further debate and critical reflection.
