  • Slipstream and genre hybridity in contemporary American fiction
    Steble, Janez
The chapter explores slipstream in contemporary American fiction as an instance of postmodern literature that freely mixes different genres to make readers "feel very strange" but also familiar with ... the chaotic and overwhelming reality of the 21st century. A substantial section on the complex and sometimes confusing terminology helps us understand the reasoning behind the term slipstream, and elucidates how other concepts associated with the genre of science fiction and postmodern literature in general assist us in deciphering genre hybridity in slipstream. It is also important to emphasize the role that science fiction plays in this fiction of cognitive dissonance, a philosophical perspective which combines the contemporary advances in sciences and the estrangement effect of fantastic literature. Finally, the chapter provides examples of slipstream or genre hybridity in selected works by authors who are recognized by the mainstream: Jonathan Lethem, Michael Cunningham, and Thomas Pynchon. Each writer uses genres related to the fantastic, especially science fiction, to take us into strange yet familiar realms which consist of epistemological and ontological contradictions; but they do not lose cohesion nor comprehensibility.
