Reality and simulation in Jonathan Lethem's Chronic City : virtuality and information narrative within the posthuman paradigm = Resničnost in simulacija v romanu Jonathana Lethema Chronic City : virtualnost in informacijska pripoved v okviru posthumanistične paradigme : magistrsko delo

The present master's thesis focuses on what the posthuman is and how virtuality manifests within the posthuman paradigm. In the philosophical sense, posthumanism is defined as the reimagining of the ...liberal humanism of the Renaissance toward human subjectivity, defined by its interpenetration with technology. The posthumanist view is then presented in detail as theorised by N. Katherine Hayles, who defines the posthuman in relation to the development of cybernetics. The thesis also focuses on the concept of virtuality as defined within the posthuman paradigm: the interpenetration of cultural and material objects with informational patterns. Baudrillard's theory of simulacra and his definition of hyperreality is also presented, as it is crucial to Hayles' definition of virtuality, as well as the dual nature of the subject that arises as a consequence of combining embodiment with informational pattern. The effect of the virtual on the narrative is also one of the crucial elements of this thesis, thus summarizing Hayles' definition of information narratives. The analytical part of this thesis applies abovementioned concepts to Jonathan Lethem's novel Chronic City (2009) to prove that the novel heavily relies on the posthuman paradigm of pattern/randomness and the use of hyperreality as a means of creation and transformation of the textual body. The novel also features virtual reality and simulation, as well as exposes posthuman subjects as hybrids between analog and digital subjects.
