The thesis deals with the translational approaches to dashes in five tales taken from The Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe ("The Black Cat" (1843), "William Wilson" (1839), "The ...Fall of the House of Usher" (1839), "MS. Found in a Bottle" (1833) and "The Gold-Bug" (1843)) which were used by Jože Udovič in his translations in the story collection Zlati hrošč from 1960. The theoretical part introduces and problematizes the notion of style in literary text, particularly in relation to punctuation, specifically the dash. It exposes some translation challenges of Poe's tales and then focuses on Poe's own view of style and the roles performed by the dash as a stylistic tool. It also presents the translator's understanding of Poe and the reception of his translations by Slovene critics, considering also the temporal dimension, i.e. the change of the use of dashes from Poe's time to the time of Udovič's translation and the modern use of dash. Further on, it enumerates the different instances of dash usage in English and Slovene, with a specific focus on the dashes' stylistic power. The empirical part is based on the corpus consisting of sentences taken from the five tales containing dashes and their Slovene translations. Different translational approaches are presented together with illustrative examples: omission, use of the same kind of dash, use of a different kind of dash and compensation. In the end I compare the overall structure of dash use in the original texts and in the translations and account for the most significant deviations.
