Hospital infections imply all infections that have been acquired in health care institutions, and as one of the causative agents, the emergent and pathogenic Klebsiella pneumoniae is singled out. It ... contaminates the hospital environment in the form of a biofilm whose eradication requires more than one method of disinfection. Ozone proved to be an effective agent with its strong oxidative properties and antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of ozone in reducing the number of bacteria in the biofilm K. pneumoniae in three clinical strains. The 24-hour biofilm K. pneumoniae created on ceramic tiles, with dimensions of 1 cm x 1 cm, is exposed to a concentration of 25 ppm of gaseous ozone for one hour in a closed box model. For each strain, before and after ozone treatment, the total number of bacteria expressed as CFU/cm2 was determined, and the bioluminescence expressed in RLU (Relative Light Units) was measured. RLU and crystal violet staining were carried out to determine the total biomass. Ozone treatment resulted in a reduction in the total biomass of K. pneumoniae from 35.87% to 40.98%, as well as a reduction in the total number of bacteria by 98.88%. The biomass reduction determined by ATP bioluminescence was 84.76%. Ozone at a concentration of 25 ppm for an hour of exposure was not enough for a complete reduction of the biofilm created, and it is definitely recommended to combine it with other mechanical and chemical methods of disinfection.
