  • Sediment yields from three western American rivers and their ecosystem impacts
    Milhous, Robert T.
Three rivers are used to illustrate the need to use river sediment size in the impacts of reservoirs on the river substrate. The Rio Grande is a sand bed river with large loads of fine material. The ... sediment size data indicates most of the fine material delivered to the Rio Grande by a tributary will move through the river channel without becomingg part of the substrate but some of the time, fines will be deposited on the stream bed surface. More area will be covered by fines if the load of fines from the tributary increases. The Gunnison River is a gravel bed river with large loads of fine sediment. The fines and sand may be flushed from the river if the sediment transport capacity is increased by releases from the reservoirs. The Trinity River has a gravel bed and the river transports large quantities of sand, fines (material m 0.062 mm) are relatively unimportant. The regulated Trinity River transports sands, naturally transported as suspended load, as bed load
