  • A pace toward a distributed manufacturing system
    Butala, Peter ; Sluga, Alojzij
ǂIn ǂthe paper an overlook of new concepts and research experiments of future manufacturing systems is given. The objective of the new concepts is how to manage a growing complexity in manufacturing. ... Futhermore, the structuring of the information system to support distributed manufacturing is focused. A central role plays an elementary work system as a basic building block of the complex structure of the manufacturing system. An attempt to define the agentbased work system as an autonomous building block for decision making in a distributed environment is discused. On this basis, dynamic structures can be built up and assigned for specific manufacturing objectives. In the proposed arhitecture of a distributed manufacturing system the building blocks are represented by multi-agent structures. Agents are consolidated in an agent network in order to realize a distributed functioning of a system. The concept is demonstrated and discussed in a fabrication domain. Several agent-based autonomous building blocks are defined. In particular, a machining work system and its virtual counterpart, an abstract resource profile representing work system in the information space is constituted. Some basic operational aspects of planning and fabrication of components are argued in more detail.
