  • Physical aging and shear creep of poly(carbonate)
Schwarzl, Friedrich Rudolf ; Kaschta, J.
In order to check Struik's theory of creep under proceeding aging, accurate torsional creep measurements have been performed on poly(carbonate) in the glassy region and in the glass-rubber ... transition. From the latter, the course of the compliance in volume equilibrium is derived. It is described by means of a discrete retardation spectrum with 10 logarithmically equidistant retardation times. From the measurements in the glassy region, the relationship between glass time and age is determined. For the latter a closed expression is proposed, which may be integrated to the effective time inclosed form. Using Struik's theory, creep compliances under proceeding aging are calculated and compared with measurements. Agreement is found for temperatures near the glass transition temperature and for very low temperatures (55 K below Tg). In the temperature region between, the theory overestimates the effect of aging, i.e., creep compliances are higher than predicted by theory.
