  • Photoviscoelastic stress analysis near contact regions under complex loads
    Yoneyama, S. ; Takashi, Masahisa ; Gotoh, J.
This study discusses several types of contact, involving compression and sliding, between a time-dependent material and a rigid body. It demonstrates a useful application of a new hybrid method for ... photoviscoelastic stress analysis under non-proportional loading conditions, in which the principal axes of stress, strain, and birefringence are not aligned with each other. Using a computer-aided image processing technique, the distribution of fringe order and birefringent principal axes in the vicinity of the contact surface are evaluated from a few photoviscoelastic images through a plane polariscope by using the well known diagonal summation theorem. The variation of the principal stress and/or strain differences as well as their directions are easily obtainable over a wide time range by use of the optical constitutive equations of photoviscoelasticity and the characteristic material properties functions.
