  • Reestablishing pastures on cleared (thinned) shrubland for sheep grazing

    Results from white clover oversowing and phosphorus topdressing experiment on thinned shrubland are reported. The old stand of hazel shrubs and some other bushes was cut during mid summer. Only some ... taller and better developed trees were left to grow to initiate the silvopastoral system of land use. Sheep and goats were used to retard the growth of shrubs. To reestablish herbage plants on such thinned land is a need for to protect the soil on slopes and stony ground from erosion. Two months after the oversowing white clover establishment was very good. In the first year the experimental site was grazed on five weeks rotation. The herbage mass was estimated before rotation and minerals content during summer of wite clover, native grasses, leaves of hazel shrub and beech tree and herbage on adjacent paddock are given.
